Under the project “Strengthening Nutrition and Food Security through Agricultural Development,” the Agricultural Technology and Nutrition Fair-2025 was held in Lalmonirhat.
On Monday at 10 a.m., the day-long fair was inaugurated at the Khamarbari grounds in Lalmonirhat district town, organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension.
In his opening speech, the Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner H M Rokib Haider said, “The contribution of farmers is undeniable to ensure Bangladesh’s food security. The use of modern technology, safe food production, and cultivation of nutrient-rich crops are now the demands of the time. If farmers receive technical support and assistance in marketing, agriculture will become one of the main driving forces of the country.”
Present as a special guest, Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Md. Tarikul Islam said, “The current government is tirelessly working to transform agriculture into a modern, sustainable, and commercial sector. If technology and training are ensured for farmers under easy conditions, a fundamental change in the production system will be possible.”
In his welcome speech, agriculturalist Md. Shah Alam Mia said, “Although there has been success in food production in the country, nutritional deficiency remains a major challenge. Farmers need to be encouraged to cultivate nutritious and zinc-enriched rice, orange-colored sweet potatoes, high-yielding and vitamin-rich vegetables. At the same time, awareness about the use of organic fertilizers and environmentally friendly technology for safe crop production is essential.”
The fair was chaired by Dr. Md. Saikhul Arifin, Deputy Director of the Lalmonirhat Department of Agricultural Extension. He said, “Through this fair, farmers are getting hands-on experience directly on modern agricultural technology, improved varieties, organic methods, and pest management. This will not only increase their production but also help ensure safe and nutritious food.”
Present at the fair were Khondokar Sohail Ahmed, Agriculture Officer of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, A K M Faridul Haque, Additional Agriculture Officer of Lalmonirhat Sadar, and agriculture officers from five upazilas of the district.
More than 12 stalls from government and non-government organizations displayed improved seed varieties, agricultural machinery, organic fertilizers, safe vegetables, smart agricultural technology, and presented various agricultural information through videos. The fair became vibrant with visits from students, farmers, entrepreneurs, and the general public.
According to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), nearly 40% of the country’s total labor force is still engaged in the agricultural sector, which contributes about 12% to the national income. However, challenges in agriculture are increasing due to urbanization and climate change. In this context, raising awareness about nutrition and safe food and updating agricultural technology are timely steps.
Organizers stated that such fairs play an important role in introducing modern agricultural technology to farmers across the country. At the same time, it will support the national goal of achieving food and nutrition security.
