Sylhet Bureau
The contributions of the Manipuri and other small ethnic communities in the movement for the country’s rights are well-documented in history. Yet, they are victims of various forms of discrimination and face multifaceted threats. Their language, literature, and culture are on the verge of extinction.
The identity and existence of ethnic communities are under severe threat due to discrimination and various conspiracies. Discrimination is not desirable to anyone.
These remarks were made by speakers at the 75th anniversary celebration of the Manipuri Samaj Kallyan Samity (MOSKS), the oldest guardian organization of the Manipuri community in Bangladesh, registered with the government. The event was organized by the Sylhet district branch of MOSKS at the Media Conference Hall of the Electronic Media Journalists Association in Sylhet city on Saturday. The discussion session, held on Saturday night, was presided over by Rotarian Nirmal Kumar Singha, president of the MOSKS Sylhet district branch.
The event was moderated by Sangram Singha, the general secretary of the organization. The speakers emphasized that establishing a coordinated “Indigenous Cultural Institute” in the capital, Dhaka, in addition to the districts and divisions inhabited by Manipuri and other ethnic communities, is a heartfelt demand. Such an institute could serve as a central hub for preserving the identity of ethnic communities while fostering the development of their diverse cultures.
They also demanded the formation of a separate “Development Council” to ensure the overall welfare and development of the Manipuri and other small ethnic communities. They called for admission facilities for ethnic communities in all public medical colleges and universities in the Sylhet region, where Manipuri and other ethnic groups reside. They further urged the reservation of space in BSCIC industrial estates, special economic zones, or EPZs for the production, exhibition, marketing, and export of promising exportable products by Manipuri and other ethnic communities, as well as the allocation of spaces for duty-free exhibition and marketing centers in divisional cities.
