
17 arrested with Yaba worth Tk 7 cr near Saint Martin’s Island

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has detained 17 drug traffickers along with yaba tablets worth about Tk 7 crore during a special anti-drug operation near Saint Martin’s Island.
Lieutenant Commander Harun-ar-Rashid, Media Officer of the Coast Guard informed this in a press release on Friday afternoon.
According to the statement, based on secret intelligence, a special operation was carried out at 1:00 AM on Friday in the sea area adjacent to Saint Martin’s Island under Teknaf Police Station. The operation was jointly conducted by Coast Guard Station Teknaf and the Shah Porir Dwip Outpost.
During the operation, the team noticed suspicious movement of two engine-driven wooden boats. When signaled to stop, the boats attempted to flee into deep sea upon realizing the presence of Coast Guard personnel. After a one-hour chase, both boats were successfully intercepted.
Upon searching the boats, the team recovered 140,000 pieces of yaba tablets and 40 packs of foreign cigarettes (brand: Merit), with an estimated market value of Tk 7.02 crore. A total of 17 individuals involved in the smuggling operation were detained.
Legal proceedings are underway against the arrested traffickers and regarding the seized contraband.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard has reaffirmed its commitment to continue such operations in the future to maintain national security and law and order in coastal areas.
