29,000 students cross on bench bridges for 30 years
Zskir Azad, Cumilla
Cumilla Victoria Government College, a 126-year-old educational institution. During the monsoon season, the college's degree branch campus becomes a beel. This waterlogging problem has been going on for 30 years. During this time, 29,000 students of the college travel in water and on bench bridges.
When we went to the college, we saw that the Arts Building, Millennium Building, Science Building and Library Building were submerged in water. In some rooms, the water was knee-deep and in others, the feet were wet. In some places, teachers and students were crossing by making bench bridges.
The picture of the fields and gardens outside these buildings is also similar. Meanwhile, when it rains, the main road outside the college gets knee-deep in water. When the water accumulates, it becomes impassable. There is a drain next to the road. Along with the rainwater, dirty water from the drains comes up on the roads and campus. These images have been seen on the college campus during the heavy rains of the last few days.
While searching for the reason for the submersion in water, it was found that the railway line on the east side of the college. Housing areas on the north, south and west. The college's degree branch campus is lower compared to these areas. Due to which the water inside cannot go out. But the water outside comes in. The college authorities have taken various steps including digging ponds and removing water with motor pumps. But several teachers of the college feel that this system is not sufficient during the monsoon.
Several teachers and employees of the college said that to get rid of this problem of waterlogging, the college must stop the water from outside coming to the campus. Besides, there will be no permanent solution. A long-term plan is needed to solve this problem. I have heard that our principal has informed the higher authorities about this matter.
Abir Lohani a third-year degree student of the college, said, "Where is the end of this problem! We have a lot of trouble during teaching and exams during the monsoon season." We want a beautiful campus.
First-year honors students Adiba Akhter and Israt Jahan said, "This is an ancient and traditional educational institution of the country. This poor condition of the institution's campus is unacceptable."
Comilla Victoria Government College Principal Professor Abul Bashar Bhuiyan said, "This problem is arising because our college campus is low. We have taken a plan to build boundaries from all sides.
Once the boundaries are in place, the water in the surrounding area will be stopped. If this project is implemented, it will be a long-term solution to the problem."
