Allegations of extortion from fishermen by Jamshed Member in Sandwip

Some victims have held a press conference alleging extortion from some Muslim fishermen of Wards 8 and 9 of Magadhara Union in Sandwip. The accused in the case of extortion from them are Jamshed Member and his gang. 

The press conference was held at 5 pm on Wednesday. 

At the conference, the victims said that on May 19, a 10th grade student named Rifat was murdered over the encroachment of a canal in Ward 9 of Magadhara Union. They have been made accused in a case filed for the murder. They allege that their fishing nets are in the sea. Rifat's father Jamshed Member extorted money from their staff (naya) working in this fishing village by threatening to make them accused in the case. Jamshed Member and his associates extorted about one lakh taka from their fishing staff (naya) several times at different times since June 3. They also informed the press conference that they have filed a complaint with the police station in this incident. 

Omar Faruk Sumon, a resident of Ward No. 8 of Magadhara Union, read out a written statement at the press conference. Magadhara Union BNP Co-Organizing Secretary Md. Fulmia, Md. Ilias and Nasir Uddin also spoke at the time. The accused in the case filed in the Rifat murder case also said that they are currently on bail.
