The 26 Engineer Construction Battalion (ECB) of Bangladesh Army is playing a key role in infrastructure development, security and social welfare in the remote hill areas of Rangamati.
Under the 34 Engineer Construction Brigade, the battalion started work on the border road (Rajsthali-Dumdumia-Farua- Bilaichhari-Saichal-Barkhali- Thegamukh) on July 3, 2019. Despite difficult terrain, landslides and adverse weather, it has already completed 76 km of flexible pavement out of 130 km. Work on another 28 km from Bogakhali to Karallachhari is ongoing.
The road has improved law and order, brought remote areas under full administrative control, and enabled locals to transport banana, turmeric, ginger and other produce to Chattogram and Rangunia.
As part of welfare work, the battalion has built 3 passenger sheds, 4 primary schools and 9 water points, and planted 70,680 fruit and forest saplings.
Recently, on November 2, it donated 8 bundles of tin for renovation of the Buddhist monastery at Gachbagan Para, Saichal. It also distributed school uniforms and educational materials to students of Thumpara Government Primary School, took responsibility for salaries of two teachers, built a playground, and installed solar panels and fans at Bogakhali Lower Secondary School.
A cancer patient from the area was also airlifted by helicopter to Dhaka CMH for treatment on the instruction of 26 ECB Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Abdullah Al Masud, and has now recovered.
Locals say if such positive activities continue, the remote hill region will soon turn into a prosperous part of Bangladesh.
