A courtesy meeting was held on Thursday between the Minister for Cultural Affairs, Nitai Roy Chowdhury, MP, and the Argentinian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Marcelo Carlos Cesa, at the Bangladesh Secretariat to discuss diversifying bilateral relations, expanding cultural exchange, and celebrating a shared passion for football.
The high-level meeting was also attended by the Minister of State for Cultural Affairs, Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam, MP, Argentina's Deputy Head of Mission, Patricio Urueña Palacio, and the Director of the South America Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kazi Anarkali, alongside other senior ministry officials.
During the bilateral talks, both sides recalled the historic cultural bond between the two nations, notably highlighting the profound friendship between Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and the celebrated Argentinian writer Victoria Ocampo. Ambassador Cesa remarked that while the people of Argentina primarily recognize Bangladesh through the literary works of Tagore, there is a growing eagerness to learn about other talented Bangladeshi authors. He requested the translation of contemporary Bangladeshi literary masterpieces into Spanish and reiterated his invitation for Bangladesh to actively participate in the upcoming Buenos Aires International Book Fair.
The ambassador also highly praised the spiritual songs of Baul Emperor Lalon Shah, emphasizing the importance of translating Lalon Geeti into Spanish to introduce his philosophy to the global stage.
Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury expressed the eternal gratitude of the Bangladeshi people for Argentina's unique support during the 1971 Liberation War and its swift diplomatic recognition of Bangladesh in early 1972. He emphasized that the current new government, prioritizing its "Bangladesh First" policy, is determined to expand multifaceted relations with Argentina on the basis of mutual equality and dignity. Pointing out the lack of a formal cultural pact between the two countries, the minister urged the speedy finalization of the draft "Agreement of Cultural Cooperation" sent by Bangladesh. He noted that this framework would beautifully bridge Bangladesh’s Baul and folk traditions with Argentina’s iconic Tango and Chamamé dances, adding that ties should be widened further through regular exchanges in cinema, mass media, and other cultural avenues.
To give the bilateral relationship a permanent and landmark shape, Bangladesh placed a formal proposal during the meeting to name a street in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, after Bangladesh. Additionally, considering the excellent climatic compatibility between the two nations, Bangladesh extended an eco-friendly proposal to plant and transfer some of its traditional native plants to Argentina.
Highlighting people-to-people connections, Ambassador Cesa revealed that four highly popular Argentinian social media influencers and bloggers are currently being brought to Bangladesh in connection with the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The content creators will travel across Bangladesh to document the intense craze, love, and culture of millions of local Argentina football fans.
To further catalyze this cultural momentum, State Minister Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam proposed hosting a glamorous joint "Cultural Evening" featuring renowned artists from both Bangladesh and Argentina.
