Zakir Azad, Cumilla

Farmers in the sugarcane fields of Cumilla , like other upazilas, are showing increasing interest in sugarcane cultivation in Talukpara of Bataichhari Union of Barura Upazila.

They are also getting good prices due to high demand in the market. Farmers are smiling as they are getting double the profit even after deducting the cost of production. The Agriculture Department says that government projects will be taken to expand sugarcane cultivation, and farmers will be provided training.

According to the District Agricultural Extension Department, in the current survey season, sugarcane was cultivated on about 300 hectares of land in 10 upazilas of Cumilla , including Muradnagar, Burichang, Debidwar, Bipara, Chandina, Daudkandi, Chauddagram, Langal Kot, Lalmai, Barura. This year, the target has been set at 500 hectares of land.

Sugarcane cultivation was once very low compared to other districts. However, in the last few years, many farmers are turning to sugarcane cultivation as it has become profitable. Especially high land and sandy-loamy soil are suitable for sugarcane cultivation, said Agriculture Officer Hossain Mia.

Farmers Yasin, Khokon Member, Khair Member, Faruk Ahmed, Ta Ru Mia, Ali Newaz of Talukpara village of Bataichhari union in Barura upazila have started sugarcane cultivation on their own rice fields for the last few years. Regarding sugarcane production, farmer Yasin said that he spent 1 lakh taka last year and sold sugarcane worth about 3 lakh taka this year. This year too, his sugarcane harvest has been bumper and he is expecting a good price. Currently, each piece of sugarcane is being sold in the market for 40 to 50 taka. Apart from chewing this sugarcane, it is also quite popular for making jaggery.
Farmer Khokon Member said, ‘The sugarcane yield has been good this year due to the favorable weather. We are happy to get a higher price than the cost of production.’

Another farmer in the area, Tarumia, said, ‘Earlier, we only used paddy. But paddy is not that profitable. Now, we are seeing that the cost is less and the profit is more by growing sugarcane. So, in the future, we will cultivate sugarcane on more land. The harvest comes in 9 months. This time, there has been a bumper harvest of Rangvilas 208 and 532 varieties of sugarcane on about 50 hectares of land in our area. To meet the local demand, these sugarcane are purchased by retail traders from Cumilla district, Dhaka, and Chittagong through contact on the land for 3-4 lakh taka per cane. It is estimated that 100 sugarcane is being sold at 4000-5000 taka per cane.

A local sugarcane seller, Khair, said, ‘There is a lot of demand for sugarcane in the area now. It is sold as soon as it is picked in the market. We are selling sugarcane at 60-80 taka per piece. This sugarcane is planted in the beginning of Kartik, after spraying pesticides with care, the harvest is ready for sale after waiting for 9 long months. Farmers are happy with this yield because they get three times the profit with less cost. Therefore, farmers are increasing their interest in sugarcane cultivation.

Agriculture officials said that sugarcane is a cash crop. Once sugarcane cultivation was disappearing, but it has been increasing again since the last two years. Currently, sugarcane is being cultivated in every upazila. Training and government assistance will be provided to make farmers more interested in sugarcane cultivation.
