Coast Guard conducts regular raids, awareness campaigns in southern Bangladesh to protect mother hilsa

The Bangladesh Coast Guard South Zone is conducting continuous patrols, special operations, and public awareness campaigns across the country's southern coastal regions to protect egg-bearing mother hilsa during its peak breeding season.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, Media Officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, shared the details in a press release on Sunday morning.
To ensure the safe breeding and conservation of hilsa, the government has imposed a 22-day nationwide ban on catching, transporting, storing, marketing, and selling hilsa from October 8 to October 29. In line with the ban, Coast Guard South Zone has intensified intelligence surveillance, routine sea and river patrols, and strict monitoring across its operational jurisdiction.
Alongside law enforcement drives, Coast Guard personnel are conducting awareness programs—including miking, distribution of leaflets, and discussion sessions—to encourage fishermen and local communities to comply with the conservation law. The operations are being carried out in coordination with local district administrations, the Department of Fisheries, and other law enforcement agencies to take stern legal action against violators.
Reaffirming their commitment to marine resource protection under the motto "Conservation today ensures abundance tomorrow," the Coast Guard urged citizens to respect the seasonal fishing ban to sustain the country's blue economy.
The public has been advised to report any violations or illegal fishing activities to the Coast Guard emergency helpline number 16111.
