Bangladesh Coast Guard seized approximately 1,632 kg of prohibited polythene bags and 2,768 kg of raw materials—valued at around Tk 66 lakh—during a raid on an illegal manufacturing factory in the Alir Ghat area adjacent to the Buriganga River in Dhaka early Saturday.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the seizure on Saturday afternoon.
Acting on a tip-off, a special operational team from Coast Guard Station Pagla conducted the raid around 4:30 AM in the Alir Ghat area under Lalbagh Police Station. Upon searching a local factory premise, officers recovered the massive stash of banned polythene and raw materials. No arrests were made as the factory owners fled prior to the raid.
The confiscated polythene and processing materials have been handed over to the Department of Environment (DoE), Dhaka Metropolitan Branch, for further legal proceedings.
The Coast Guard operations to curb illegal polythene production and protect the environment will continue, the press release added.
