Forest Department officials seized 600 deer traps and 16 illegal crab-catching tools from the Sundarbans in Tiar Char in Bagerhat district on Monday.

The forest officials on Monday conducted a drive in the area and seized the deer traps and 16 banned crab-catching devices, locally known as charu, from the Tiar Char area under the Sundarbans East Division.

However, no members of the poaching syndicate were arrested during the operation.

According to the Forest Department, poachers had set the traps in the forest for hunting deer and placed the charu in canals to illegally catch crabs.

So far, a total of 1,185 illegal traps have been seized from the Sundarbans in the past one week.

Earlier on June 10, the forest officials seized 450 deer traps from Choto Sinduk Baria area in the Sundarbans.

Besides, the forest officials in different drives seized 82 deer traps from Bharani area and 53 deer traps from Suryamukhi canal of the Sundarbans on June 6.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans East Division, said efforts are on to take legal steps in this connection.
