The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday arrested a man in connection with the case of a fatal shooting that occurred during the anti-discrimination protest in Dhaka last year.
The arrestee, SM Kamal Haider, known as the close associate to former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, was arrested in a raid conducted by CID in the capital.
CID’s Special Superintendent of Police (Media) Jasim Uddin Khan said the operation was carried out based on intelligence from a confidential source.
The murder case stems from an incident on August 4, last year when gunfire broke out in front of Patam Restaurant, located at Dhanmondi 3/1 Lake Road, amid the anti-discrimination demonstration. One protester, Abdullah Siddiq, was killed in the shooting.
A murder case was later filed, and CID took over the investigation, said SP Jasim.
“During the investigation, CID analysed witness statements, CCTV footage, and other evidence, which provided preliminary proof of SM Kamal Haider’s involvement in the incident,” he said.
The process of producing the arrestee before the court is underway, he added.
