Exchange of fire between law enforcement, protesters in Sajek
An exchange of fire occurred between law enforcement personnel and protesters in Sajek, Rangamati, as authorities attempted to clear a road blockade to safely transport tourists to Khagrachhari. Several army personnel were reportedly injured during the incident.
The incident took place around 11:00 AM on Thursday (October 22) near Ujobazar in Sajek Union, Baghaichhari Upazila. However, reports indicate that the tourists who had been stranded at Ujobazar have since reached their destinations safely.
Around 8:30 AM, approximately 3,000 tourists departed from Sajek for Khagrachhari under the special protection of law enforcement agencies. Upon reaching the Ujobazar area, the vehicles carrying the tourists encountered a blockade. As authorities attempted to remove the barricades to allow the vehicles to pass, an exchange of fire broke out.
According to the latest information, the tourists have safely reached Dighinala. A large contingent of law enforcement personnel has been deployed at the scene to bring the situation under control.
The blockade on the Sajek road is reportedly the result of a conflict between two regional political organizations vying for dominance. On Wednesday afternoon, Natun Joy Chakma, president of the Sajek Karbari Association, and Babudhan Chakma, convener of the Sajek Committee for the Protection of Public Rights, issued a joint statement announcing an indefinite road blockade, effective from Thursday.
Earlier, on Wednesday night, the Rangamati District Administration—via an urgent public notice signed by Deputy Commissioner Nazm Ashrafi—had announced the temporary closure of Sajek Valley.
