Govt sets target to generate 3,000 to 4,000 -MW electricity from solar : State Minister Amit
Aiming to keep the national power crisis at a manageable level next summer, the government has set a target to generate 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts of electricity from solar power.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit announced the target during a view-sharing meeting organized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in Dhaka on Monday, focusing on installing rooftop solar systems across 31 public universities.
The State Minister highlighted rooftop solar installations as a simple, effective solution and noted that a flexible solar policy was formulated within two months to prevent a repeat of recent summer power shortages.
He emphasized that participation will remain voluntary based on each university's capacity, with the government and UGC offering full technical and logistical support.
To accelerate adoption, the government is hosting the 'Bangladesh Solar Expo' on November 3–4 along with a dedicated expert session for Vice-Chancellors.
UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed said, a feasibility team has already been formed, pointing to the OPEX (Operational Expenditure) model used at Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) as a practical framework to drastically reduce operational and utility expenses for public universities.
