Illegal sand lifting from Jadukata River, case filed against 8 Sylhet Bureau

Tahirpur Police in Sunamganj have filed a case against eight people for cutting the bank of the border river Jadukata and stealing mineral sand. Police also seized a steel-bodied trawler loaded with the stolen sand.
The case was lodged on Tuesday night by SI Badar Uddin, in-charge of Badaghat Police Investigation Centre, as the complainant.
The named accused are: Manna Mia alias Manna Shah, son of Bakul Mia; Roman Mia alias Roman Shah; Mokhsinur Mia alias Mokhsinur Shah, son of late Asad Mia Shah; Imam Hossain, son of Safar Ali; and Tofazzal Hossain, son of Zohur Mia — all from Ghagatia village on the bank of Jadukata in Tahirpur upazila. Three to four unnamed individuals have also been made accused.
SI Salauddin Molla, the investigating officer of the case, confirmed the matter on Wednesday.
According to the case statement, on Tuesday evening a gang led by Manna Mia alias Manna Shah, son of Bakul Mia of Ghagatia, was cutting the western bank of Jadukata River at Jhalortek and stealing mineral sand.
Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team from Tukur Bazar River Police Outpost and Badaghat Police Investigation Centre raided the spot, intercepted the trawler loaded with stolen sand from the riverbank, and seized it. Those involved in cutting the bank managed to escape.
