NCC meets to bridge political divide on caretaker govt, bicameral parliament

Staff Correspondent

The National Consensus Commission (NCC) on Wednesday met to discuss proposals aimed at bridging political differences over the caretaker government’s leadership and the formation of a proposed bicameral parliament, particularly the Upper House.

Presided over by NCC vice chair Prof Ali Riaz, the meeting was held at the commission office in the Jatiya Sangsad Complex.

At the outset of the meeting, a one-minute silence was observed in memory of the martyrs of the July-August 2024 mass uprising, marking ‘July Martyr Day’.

The meeting reviewed the key outcomes and (consensus-building) progress of the 14 days of the second-round reform dialogues held between the commission and some 30 political parties since June 02 last.

The discussion focused in particular on devising possible proposals and policy outlines to remove the differences among the political parties over the appointment process of the caretaker government chief and the formation of the proposed bicameral parliament.

At the end of the meeting, the NCC members expressed their sincere thanks to all participating political parties for joining in constructive and spontaneous discussions with the commission.

NCC members Justice Md Emdadul Haque, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, Safar Raj Hossain and Dr Md Ayyub Miah, and Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haidar were present at the meeting.
