Standard Group denies involvement  in garment sector unrest

Staff Correspondent

Standard Group has strongly denied allegations of funding or aiding the ongoing labor unrest in the country's ready-made garment (RMG) sector, terming recent media reports associating the conglomerate with such activities as completely baseless, fabricated, and misleading.

In a formal statement, the management of Standard Group clarified that the company itself has suffered substantial financial losses and operational setbacks due to the ongoing unrest. The disruption in manufacturing and supply chain operations has rendered the group unable to deliver apparel shipments to foreign buyers within agreed deadlines, incurring severe commercial damages.

Standard Group, which initiated its garment and apparel manufacturing operations in 1983, highlighted its position as one of Bangladesh's leading exporters and key contributors to the national economy, employment, and foreign currency reserves through regular tax compliance and business operations. The group asserted that it has consistently operated within national legal frameworks and has never deprived its workforce of fair wages.

Emphasizing the current economic context, the group reiterated that maintaining stability in the RMG sector, ensuring regular wage payments to thousands of workers, and safeguarding production activities remain vital to protecting national export earnings and overall economic stability.
