UGC Chairman instructs to conduct survey to assess sector-based manpower demand

Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr. Mamun Ahmed has instructed the concerned to take the initiative to conduct a national-level integrated survey to assess the actual manpower demand in different sectors of the country.
He said that one of the main goals of higher education is to prepare students for the workplace. For this, it is very important to have reliable information on what kind of skilled manpower is needed in different sectors of the country and how many and what kind of manpower are being produced by the universities.
He gave these instructions at a meeting held at the ‘Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HIT)’ project office at Copyright Bhaban in Agargaon on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by UGC member Professor Dr. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Planning and Development Department Director Mohammad Makshudur Rahman Bhuiyan, HIT Project Director Professor Dr.
Asaduzzaman and other concerned officials were present.

The UGC Chairman said that due to the lack of a specific understanding of the needs of the job market, a visible gap has been created between higher education and the industry sector. To bridge this gap, he suggested that the revised project proposal of HIT include the issue of conducting a survey to assess manpower needs.
He also said that maximum transparency and efficiency should be ensured in the expenditure of project funds. The valuable research equipment purchased in universities under the previous HECEP project should be verified and unnecessary purchases of the same type of equipment should be avoided. If necessary, he suggested conducting a separate survey in this regard as well.
