Bringing an end to a prolonged legal battle 146 days after the election, Sarwar Alamgir, elected on the BNP ticket from the Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari) Constituency, has finally taken his oath as a Member of Parliament.
Following a High Court verdict declaring his candidacy valid and the subsequent issuance of the official gazette, he was sworn in at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at 7:00 PM on Thursday.
Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, administered the oath of office.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with several cabinet members, were present at the ceremony.
Earlier on Thursday morning, a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md. Asif Hasan delivered the verdict declaring Sarwar Alamgir’s candidacy valid. This ruling cleared all legal hurdles for gazetting his election results and his swearing-in as a lawmaker.
The court had set July 9 for the verdict after concluding hearings on the rule on July 2. Senior advocate Ahsanul Karim and Barrister A. M. Mahbub Uddin Khokon represented Sarwar Alamgir during the court hearings.
Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Sarwar Alamgir said, "Alhamdulillah! The conspiracy has been defeated, and truth has triumphed. This victory belongs to the trust and love of the people of Fatikchhari." Expressing his gratitude to everyone, he added that his journey to serve the welfare of the people of Fatikchhari would continue.
With the High Court verdict and the swearing-in ceremony, Sarwar Alamgir has officially commenced his constitutional duties as the elected representative of the Chattogram-2 constituency.
