Football playing on sandy ground beside road in Tongibari raises accidents

In Tongibari, Munshiganj, football is being played on open, sandy grounds located right next to a road. During these games, the ball frequently rolls onto the road, disrupting traffic and creating a risk of accidents. This situation has become a source of concern for local residents.
On Sunday (October 25), it was observed that football was being played on sandy patches along the Tongibari-Kalibari road in the upazila. As there are no protective barriers around these grounds, there is a constant risk of the ball ending up on the road. Locals fear that accidents could occur if a player runs onto the road while chasing the ball, or if a driver is forced to brake suddenly upon seeing the ball.
According to local residents, while it is natural and positive for children and teenagers to engage in sports, playing football next to a busy road without any safety measures is dangerous. If a ball rolls onto the road—especially while motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, or other vehicles are passing—it could be difficult for drivers to react in time. Such incidents could lead to accidents involving not only the players but also pedestrians and those traveling in vehicles.
Residents suggest that providing a safe, dedicated space for sports would allow children and teenagers to play without risk. Furthermore, they emphasize the urgent need for protective measures at the grounds located near the road. They are calling on the relevant authorities to monitor the situation and take necessary action.
Concerned citizens point out that, in addition to drivers exercising caution, it is essential to ensure that high-risk areas near roads are made safe. For sports grounds situated beside roads, installing nets or protective barriers could prevent balls from rolling directly into the path of traffic. Additionally, it is important to raise awareness among children and teenagers about the dangers of playing near roads. According to them, it is more effective to identify risks and take preventive measures beforehand rather than reacting after an accident has occurred.
UNO Tanzima Anjum Sohania stated, "I have learned about this issue through you. We will take the necessary steps to raise public awareness." She further added that engaging in sports in open areas alongside a road is extremely hazardous and could lead to an accident at any moment.
