
AL president arrested in Kotalipara

Police arrested Gabriel Baroi (55), president of the Shuagram Union Awami League in Kotalipara upazila of Gopalganj on Wednesday afternoon.
Kotalipara police arrested him from Shuagram Bazar in the upazila. He is the son of the late Rabindranath Baroi of the same village.
On Thursday, Kotalipara police sent Gabriel Baroi to jail, showing him arrested in a case filed under the Special Powers Act.
According to police sources, on July 16, Awami League leaders and activists of its affiliated organizations gathered at a place called Wabdar Hat in Kotalipara upazila and staged a protest by felling trees on the highway. This caused public panic and disrupted public movement.
In this connection, police filed a case under the Special Powers Act with Kotalipara Police Station, naming 155 accused and mentioning 1,500 unidentified persons. Gabriel Baroi, president of the Shuagram Union Awami League, has been arrested in this case and sent to jail.
OC of Kotalipara Police Station, Md. Abul Kalam Azad, said, Gabriel Baroi directly led the protest on July 16 by felling trees on the highway. We arrested him after identifying him in video footage. So far, we have arrested 40 accused in this case. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused.
