Biplobi Chhatra Parishad protests Gopalganj attack, demands resignation of President

DU Corespondent

Biplobi Chhatra Parishad on Wednesday staged a protest rally at Dhaka University condemning the attack by alleged Awami League cadres on National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj.

The organisation also demanded the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The rally was held shortly after NCP activists came under attack in Gopalganj municipal park. Protesters claimed the incident reflects the Awami League's continued “fascist behavior” even a year after the July-uprisings.

Speakers at the rally alleged that Awami League-appointed individuals, including President Shahabuddin, pose a risk to democratic movements and cannot be trusted. They warned that such appointees might attempt to suppress the spirit of the July uprising.

Abdul Wahed, convenor of Biplobi Chhatra Parishad; member secretary Fazlur Rahman; assistant member secretary Jihadi Ihsan, were also present.

At least three people were killed and several others injured in clashes between police and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies over a rally of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) in Gopalganj on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the government has imposed curfew in Gopalganj district amid heightening tensions over clashes between police and Awami League activists over an NCP rally.

The curfew will remain in force from 8pm on Wednesday to 6pm on Thursday, according to the Chief Adviser’s press wing.
