Brazil edge Japan in extra-time thriller to seal last-16 spot

Omar Faruk

Brazil advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup after a grueling 2-1 victory over Asian powerhouses Japan, sealing their spot in the round of 16 courtesy of a dramatic extra-time winner. Carlo Ancelotti’s men had to dig deep after falling behind in the first half, staging a spirited second-half comeback to keep their championship aspirations alive.

The five-time world champions endured a thoroughly disjointed opening 45 minutes, struggling to find their rhythm and frequently succumbing to the high-pressing midfield dominance of a disciplined Japanese side. The breakthrough for the Samurai Blue came in the 29th minute following a costly defensive lapse from Brazil. Japan's Sano intercepted a misplaced pass from Danilo in the midfield, swiftly launched a counter-attack, and left veteran midfielder Casemiro trailing in his wake. Sano then unleashed a blistering 20-yard strike from outside the penalty box, completely beating a diving Alisson Becker. Although it was Japan’s solitary shot on target in the first half, its clinical precision was enough to give them a well-deserved lead heading into the interval.

Despite controlling the lion's share of possession, Brazil's first-half performance remained largely uninspiring and devoid of creative spark. The Seleção did manage to test the opposition twice, but Japanese custodian Suzuki comfortably dealt with both shots on target. Casemiro, who was partially at fault for Japan's opener, had also squandered a golden opportunity to score just minutes before the Japanese goal, compounding Brazil's early frustrations.

However, the narrative shifted completely after the restart as a completely rejuvenated Brazilian side took the pitch. Launching wave after wave of relentless attacks, Ancelotti's men finally reaped the rewards of their persistence in the 56th minute. Redeeming his first-half errors, an unmarked Casemiro rose highest to meet a swinging corner kick, powering a bullet header into the back of the net to restore parity. Suzuki was left with absolutely no chance as the ball flew into the top corner.

With the momentum firmly in their favor, Brazil dominated the remainder of the regulation time, reducing Japan to desperate defending. The South American giants maintained their tactical superiority into extra time, where their sustained pressure eventually yielded the decisive match-winner to break Japanese hearts. With this hard-fought triumph, Brazil safely secured their berth in the last 16, while a valiant Japan bowed out of the tournament.
