Case filed over news publication, journalists form human chain in Rajshahi

Recently, local residents detained Hafizur Rahman, an Assistant Administrative Officer of Godagari Upazila Administration, and his housemaid Rubina in a compromising situation.
Upon receiving the news, Md. Oliullah, Godagari correspondent for Dainik Janakantha , along with several other local and national media personnel, arrived at the scene.
Following the incident, they published reports about it. The published news, along with video footage, went viral on social media. Infuriated by this, a false lawsuit was filed against the journalists with the alleged involvement of the UNO . Although the journalists secured bail after the lawsuit, they have been facing repeated threats from the administration and various quarters. In response, a human chain was organized to demand the withdrawal of the case, an end to harassment, and the removal of the guilty officials.
On Tuesday noon, the human chain was formed in front of Godagari Upazila Administration building gate, organized by local journalists and the general public of Godagari, holding banners.
The lawsuit was filed by Godagari UNO Faisal Ahmed, his predecessor’s so-called "right-hand man" Assistant Administrative Officer Hafizur Rahman, and Rubina, the housemaid. Notably, Hafizur married Rubina after the incident. Since the filing of the case, suppressed anger has been simmering among locals. Despite such actions by Hafizur, an alleged associate of the Awami League, remaining in his position, local journalists and residents organized this human chain.
Speakers at the human chain said, journalists face attacks and lawsuits for publishing objective news and exposing societal irregularities. In a similar incident, two separate cases were filed—one on March 1 at Godagari Model Police Station and another on April 6 at a Rajshahi court—by Assistant Administrative Officer Hafizur Rahman and Rubina.

On February 27, Hafizur Rahman was caught by locals engaging in inappropriate activities with Rubina. From the human chain, demands were raised for the immediate withdrawal of the false cases, the removal of UNO Faisal Ahmed, and the "characterless" officer Hafizur. They also warned of tougher actions if the issue is not resolved promptly.
