The Bangladesh Coast Guard seized a large quantity of smuggled Indian sarees and cosmetics worth nearly Tk 1.18 crore during a special operation in the capital's Dholairpar area.
The drive was conducted by Coast Guard Station Pagla near the Dholairpar bus stand under Jatrabari Police Station on Monday night following a tip-off, said Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan on Tuesday noon.
During the operation, which lasted from 7:30pm to midnight, officers searched three suspicious vans and recovered smuggled Indian sarees and cosmetics valued at around Tk 1,17,97,000.
As the actual owners of the goods could not be traced at the scene, the van drivers were released along with their vehicles after signing undertaking bonds.
The seized merchandise was subsequently handed over to the Vanshal Circle Customs, Excise, and VAT Commissionerate for further legal proceedings.
