Cropland disappearing due to Jamuna erosion
Bhuiyapur (Tangail) Correspondent
For the past few days, severe erosion has started in Jigatola, Rampur and Gopinathpur areas on the eastern bank of Jamuna in Bhuiyapur, Tangail. Cropland of about one kilometer in that area is disappearing into the river due to Jamuna erosion. As the erosion continues, houses, residences, educational institutions and numerous establishments are under threat. Local people are spending their days in fear.
On the ground, it can be seen that several acres of cropland on the eastern bank of Jamuna have disappeared into the river due to erosion in the past few days. Cropland is disappearing into the river every day as the erosion of Jamuna continues. Their land is disappearing into the river before the eyes of the farmers. Local farmers are silently shedding tears while sitting on the banks of the river, watching such a scene.
Farmers in the erosion-affected areas said - Every year during the monsoon season, our homes and crop lands are washed away by the Jamuna due to erosion. This year, even before the monsoon, our crop lands were washed away by the Jamuna due to erosion. Every year, hundreds of acres of our crop lands are washed away by the river due to river erosion.
Although the local administration and the Water Development Board have assured to construct guide dams and lay geo bags to prevent erosion, no effective steps have been taken so far. We strongly demand that the relevant authorities lay guide dams and geo bags to protect our crop lands.
Bhuiyapur UNO Md. Abu Abdullah Khan said, necessary measures will be taken very soon after visiting the erosion-affected areas and contacting the District Water Development Board.
