Failed parents of successful children: The Bitter Harvest of Modern Parenting

Failed parents of successful children: The Bitter Harvest of Modern Parenting

By Farjana Akter

Todays the biggest tragedy is the lack of real family education and moral values.
Parents who sacrifice all their life's savings, happiness and dreams to make their children successful in the eyes of society and reach their last age are left in old age homes or neglected in a corner of the house. In the name of modernity, the formation of a single family and human values are being lost so much that its rate is taking the form of an epidemic in society. If this silent epidemic continues, where will the invaluable responsibility of the child towards his parents end up, which raises questions for the nation in the future. It is the parents of highly educated, wealthy and socially established children who are suffering the most from loneliness and mental anguish today. Although there are various reasons behind this, the biggest influencer is the addiction of teaching children to play the rat race in the unhealthy competition of society. In the context of today's society, a family does not take strong steps regarding behavior as before. As a result, the child lives in apathy and indifference. A child's first school is his family and the first teacher is his parents. Many parents think that their only responsibility is to let their child study in expensive clothes, expensive gadgets and reputable educational institutions. They want to see the child's grades but do not care about his mind, and cruelty is created between them mentally. When the child is first in the class or does well, the parents are proud. As a result, a kind of ego comes into the child. Since the child is ahead in the race for success in the book and pen, then even if that child is aggressive, the parents do not care. Thus, they build a wall of class differences and discrimination. When a child misbehaves with a rickshaw puller or a maid, many parents laugh it off or ignore it. This is basically the biggest failure of parents. They have taught their children to build a career in the institutional field but do not teach them to build ideal honesty and character. As a result, when these children grow up, they consider their parents a burden and send them to old age homes or neglect them as if they are the ones who are dying while still alive. Basically, the tears of those parents are basically a cruel result of their own wrong parenting. Even if the parents have a desire to become doctors or engineers since childhood, the mentality of educating them with good education is seen in very few parents. According to this, textbook knowledge becomes the only goal of their life. In the desire to succeed in the rat race, they forget how to serve their parents. Paper-based degrees and external success become the only goal of their life. It is not only the inability of parents to teach values that makes children scoundrels, but children have their own responsibility in this regard. From childhood, in addition to the family, institutional education and social ties influence them to learn human values. Moreover, things like the touch of Western culture, egoism in the name of modernity, indecent attitudes, and eccentricity in showing respect have a very bad effect in the present era. In this case, the family has to start practicing honesty, compassion and respect. Parents have to set an example in front of their children through their own behavior. Because children learn more by watching their parents behavior than by listening to advice. Along with the family, society and the state must be brought into the highest discipline. In Bangladesh, a specific law was enacted in 2013 to ensure the maintenance of parents by children, if necessary, and it must be implemented significantly. There is a provision of a maximum fine of 1 lakh taka for violating the law and 3 months imprisonment for non-payment. The government must make maximum use of the law to save it from this silent epidemic. Besides, educational institutions should not be made just prisons of rote learning but should be developed as areas of life-oriented and moral education. It is necessary to make human values, social responsibility and compassion mandatory and practical in the curriculum. Conscious people of the society should be proactive in this regard so that if a parent faces the problem of helplessness, everyone comes forward. The construction of old age homes should be discouraged. We need to take collective steps so that no more unborn child cruelly tortures their parents just for the sake of degree success and in the near future every parent gets the opportunity to sacrifice the last bit of their life with childlike care.
