Farmers, students, public form human chain demanding restoration of canals in Tongibari
Md. Masum, Tongibari (Munshiganj)
A human chain and protest have been held demanding restoration of all the canals in Tongibari Upazila of Munshiganj, including the important Arial.
The human chain was organized by the people of all walks of life and the Canal Protection Council at the Upazila Parishad grounds for an hour at around 10 am on Wednesday.
Hundreds of farmers, students and the public participated in it.
The people who formed the human chain said that Tongibari Upazila is mainly agricultural, especially most of the people of the upazila are involved in potato cultivation. However, for a long time, canals in various areas of the upazila, including Arial-Tongibari, have been occupied, in some places they have disappeared, in some places they have been polluted.
This has created adverse reactions to biodiversity, including water shortages in agricultural land. Farmers are facing great losses in cultivation, in particular. Again, due to the irregular flow of the canal, there is no opportunity to drain the water properly, which also causes waterlogging in some places.
In such a situation, everyone strongly demanded that the administration take necessary steps, including eviction and excavation, to rescue these canals to protect agriculture and biodiversity.
Later, the human chainers organized a protest march and wrote a memorandum to the administration with the same demand. The march circled various local roads.
