Gono Odhikar Parishad stages nationwide protests over attack on Nur

Leaders and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad staged protest rallies across the country on Saturday, condemning the recent attack on the party that left its president, Nurul Haque Nur, seriously injured.

The demonstrators demanded justice and called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the assault.

In Shariatpur, the protest march began at 4:30pm from the Central Shaheed Minar square, moved through the main roads, and concluded at the Chowrangi intersection in the district town. There, party leaders and activists staged a sit-in protest.

A rally followed, chaired by Dr. Shahjalal Saju, president of the district unit of Gono Odhikar Parishad.

Several central and local leaders addressed the gathering. Imran Al Nazir, coordinator of the Shariatpur Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, was also present.

In Narail, a protest procession started around 12 noon from the Press Club premises and returned to the same location after marching through the main roads of the town. A rally was later held there, presided over by District President Imam Hossain Selim and conducted by General Secretary Mahbub Hossain Milon.

Speakers strongly condemned the attack on Nur and reiterated their demand for swift justice.

In Chuadanga, a protest programme was organised at 5:30pm near the Barabazar Muktomanch.

The event was led by the District Students, Youth, and Gono Odhikar Parishad. The procession began in the Barabazar area, marched through various streets, and concluded in front of the Muktomanch, where participants raised slogans demanding justice.

In Rajshahi, the protest rally was held in the afternoon at Mission More, organized by Gono Odhikar Parishad’s district unit.

Leaders and activists from the party and its affiliated organisations joined the demonstration. Earlier, a procession led by Naimul Islam Naeem, former president of Rajshahi University.

Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, started from the Collectorate Ground and ended at the Mission More Gol Chattar after parading the main roads. A protest rally followed at the venue.

Party leaders across all districts condemned the ‘heinous’ attack on Nur and pledged to continue their movement until justice is served.

Earlier on Friday evening, clashes broke out between leaders and activists of Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad when a procession from the latter passed by the Jatiya Party office in Kakrail.

Gono Odhikar Parishad claimed that several of their activists, including Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, were injured when law enforcement officers charged batons during the incident.

Nur is now undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
