Human chain protesting alleged false case, harassment in Gazipur

A human chain was organized in Gazipur on Friday afternoon in protest against what locals claim to be a false case and subsequent harassment following an attack on National Citizens' Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah. The protest, held at around 4:30 PM on the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway in the Hotapara area of Gazipur Sadar Upazila, drew participation from over a hundred local residents and student activists.
Participants held a large banner denouncing Khondokar Al Amin, accusing him of extortion, drug abuse, and exploiting legal cases for personal gain. The banner also displayed a photograph of Al Amin.
Speakers at the demonstration alleged that Al Amin and his associates have long been involved in local criminal activities, including drug trafficking and intimidation. They claimed that following the attack on Hasnat Abdullah, Al Amin filed a fabricated case at the Basan Police Station, implicating over a hundred people. Of these, 16 individuals reportedly paid a total of Tk 2.2 million in bribes in exchange for assistance with securing bail, according to protestors.
Protesters also expressed concern that Al Amin and his group may have been involved in the actual assault on NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah. Earlier, activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Sreepur also staged a protest against the controversial case.
The incident in question took place on the evening of May 4, when a group of unidentified motorbike-riding assailants attacked Hasnat Abdullah’s motorcade in the Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur. At the time, Abdullah was returning to Dhaka after attending an event near Salna Agricultural University. Trapped in traffic congestion, his vehicle came under attack. The assailants shattered the car’s windows and physically assaulted him. He was later rescued and escorted to Dhaka with the help of law enforcement officials.
