Lack of parental awareness causes low literacy rates in Bishwanath, Osmaninagar: MP Tahsina Rushdie Luna

Osmaninagar (Sylhet) Correspondent

Member of Parliament for Sylhet-2 Tahsina Rushdie Luna has expressed deep concern over the low literacy and pass rates in Bishwanath and Osmaninagar upazilas, identifying parental indifference toward education as a primary barrier to regional development.

She made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while addressing a flood shelter inauguration and book distribution ceremony at Mollapara Haji Abdu Mia College in the upazila's Umarpur Union.

The lawmaker noted that many parents in the region prematurely plan to send their children abroad for work rather than focusing on their formal schooling, leading to a persistent lack of parental supervision regarding school attendance and academic progress.

MP Tahsina Rushdie Luna highlighted that educational reform formed a core pillar of the BNP's 31-point manifesto, noting that the incumbent government has prioritized the education and health sectors in its initial national budget. She pointed to the recent National Teachers' Day celebrations, during which Prime Minister personally honored 100 educators to encourage teaching excellence, contrasting it with past years when recognition was limited to a handful of individuals.

Calling for a collective effort among parents and educators to elevate academic standards, the MP emphasized that local stakeholders must take proactive roles to overcome historical educational deficits in Bishwanath and Osmaninagar.

Chaired by Mollapara Haji Abdu Mia College Principal Professor Mahmud Ali and jointly conducted by Upazila BNP Member Abu Bakkar Siddiqui and College Bengali Lecturer Kayes Uddin Ahmad, the event featured speeches by former Osmaninagar Upazila Parishad Chairman Mainul Haque Chowdhury, former Umarpur Union Parishad Chairman and BNP leader Cherag Ali, Upazila BNP Organizing Secretary Raihan Ahmad, parent representative Ahababul Hossain Ahabab, Economics Lecturer Rubina Akhter, and twelfth-grade student Asadullah.

The ceremony was attended by Osmaninagar Upazila BNP General Secretary Abdullah Misbah, former Sylhet District BNP Information and Research Secretary Abdul Jalil Jilu, the MP’s Private Secretary Mainul Islam, local BNP and youth wing leaders, and community figures. The program commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran by Shahadat Hossain.
