No alternative to public awareness, collective action to combat climate change: Abdul Awal Mintoo

Staff Correspondent

Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Abdul Awal Mintoo, MP, stated today that there is no alternative to public awareness and collective action to combat the adverse impacts of climate change. He emphasized that environmental protection cannot be achieved by the government alone and that the active participation of ordinary citizens is essential to build a clean and green Bangladesh.

The Minister made these remarks as the chief guest at a special seminar titled "Climate Change: Today's Action, Tomorrow's Security" held this morning at the Department of Environment (DoE) Auditorium in Agargaon, the capital on Saturday.

The seminar was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) and various environmental organizations to mark World Environment Day 2026.

"Climate change is no longer a future threat; it is our daily reality," the Minister said. "Erratic rainfall, severe heatwaves, and coastal salinity are directly threatening our lives and livelihoods. To overcome this, citizens must become proactive partners in environmental conservation alongside the state."

Speaking as the special guest, Dr. Md. Saimum Parvez, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, remarked that environmental protection should not be treated merely as a collection of government projects but must be established as a national culture.

The seminar was presided over by BAPA President Prof Dr. Noor Mohammad Talukder, while BAPA Joint Secretary Mohammad Humayun Kabir Suman delivered the welcome address and vote of thanks on behalf of the environment day organizing committee.

Prof Dr. M. Firoz Ahmed, Vice-President of BAPA, presented the keynote paper at the event. The seminar was also attended by the Director General of the Department of Environment Dr. Md. Lutfar Rahman, representatives from various environmental organizations, researchers, sustainable development experts, and journalists.
