Sarjis, other NCP leaders injured in attack on Habiganj march
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has accused Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal activists of attacking its march in Habiganj, injuring several leaders, including Sarjis Alam.
Several journalists' vehicles were also vandalised.
The incident occurred around 7pm on Tuesday near the Town Hall, Habiganj Sadar Police chief Zahid Hossain said.
Police later rescued Sarjis, the party's chief organiser (north), and Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary after they were surrounded during the incident.
NCP leaders alleged that local Chhatra Dal activists had attacked the motorcade of Sarjis and Nasiruddin as they were returning from the rally.
Several journalists and NCP activists were injured during the incident. They were kept confined afterwards.
Countering the claims, Chhatra Dal activists said that NCP speakers at the rally had explicitly named BNP leaders and branded them a "force of thugs", which caused widespread anger among its members.
Local police chief Zahid Hossain said, “Chhatra Dal leaders held a demonstration following the NCP march. As tensions erupted, police rescued the NCP leaders and safely escorted them to the circuit house.”
