
Seminar on World Environment Day at DU

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, a seminar on "Let’s Eliminate the Use of Plastics, Build a Pollution and Plastic-Free Green Campus" was held on Sunday at Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building Seminar Room, organized by the Arboriculture Center of Dhaka University.
The Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Prof Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, was present as the chief guest at the seminar. The seminar was organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Environment Parliament, and Green Future Foundation.
The inaugural session was presided over by Prof Dr. Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Director of the Arboriculture Center. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha and Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof Dr. Mohammad Ikramul Haque addressed the seminar as special guests.
Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof Dr. Abdus Salam presented a paper on the harmful effects of plastic and its solutions. Officials and staff of the Arboriculture Center, leaders of the Environment Parliament, representatives of the Green Future Foundation, and students were present on the occasion.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan said that the issue of environmental conservation is deeply connected with the survival of humankind. He emphasized that everyone must contribute from their respective positions to conserve biodiversity, nature, and the environment. He stated that environmental conservation activities have significantly increased on the Dhaka University campus. Tree planting programs have been strengthened. Several initiatives have been taken, including banning the burning of leaves and fireworks, and eliminating plastic waste.
These activities are being implemented on a voluntary basis with community involvement. Coordination with the government has also been enhanced in this regard. Educational and research activities on environmental issues are ongoing in various departments and institutes of the university. He urged students to actively participate in these activities throughout the year.
After the seminar, a rally with participation from teachers and students was brought out from the Senate Building, ending at the Mall area. At the end of the rally, several native tree saplings were planted in the Mall area.
