The Swindon Bengali Cultural Society (SBCS) organized its second annual five-day Sharadiya Durga Puja festival from October 16 to October 20 at Venue 3 in Swindon town centre, drawing thousands of devotees and visitors from Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, and surrounding regions.
The festival featured traditional Bengali devotional rituals, cultural performances, and civic engagement, supported by over 200 community volunteers who managed religious ceremonies, logistics, cultural programs, and hospitality. Over the course of the five days, the society prepared and distributed more than 6,000 complimentary meals, including traditional vegetarian prasadam, lunches, and dinners, to attendees.
The event commenced on October 16 with Maha Shashti Puja and continued through Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijaya Dashami. The celebration was attended by several UK dignitaries, including Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander MP, Mayor of Swindon Councillor Neil Hopkins, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire Dame Sarah Rose Troughton DCVO, and Leader of Swindon Borough Council Councillor Gary Sumner.
Cultural segments showcased performances by local youth and artists, featuring classical Indian dance, Bharatanatyam, Bollywood routines, traditional music, a children’s drawing competition, and traditional Dhamail performances. The festival concluded on October 20 with the traditional Sindoor Khela and Vijaya Dashami observances.
Organizers noted that the annual celebration aims to foster cultural heritage, community cohesion, and interfaith harmony within the region, with plans to continue the event in subsequent years.
