US 10% duty under new rule replaces expired tariff : Bangladesh not facing additional tariff burden

Clarifying recent confusion regarding the latest trade actions by the United States, officials and trade experts confirmed that Bangladesh is not facing an additional tariff burden.
Instead, the newly announced 10 percent duty replaces a temporary measure that expired on July 24, 2026.
With the standard baseline duty of 15 percent on readymade garments (RMG) combined with the new 10 percent rate, the total effective tariff for Bangladeshi apparel exports to the US remains at 25 percent.
The trajectory of US trade negotiations with Bangladesh has seen significant shifts over recent months:
Initial Proposals & Trade Deal: Washington initially announced a 37 percent reciprocal tariff rate on Bangladeshi goods, which was subsequently negotiated down to 35 percent, then 20 percent, and ultimately finalized at 19 percent under a bilateral trade agreement.
However, a US court struck down the legal foundation for those negotiated tariff frameworks, preventing the 19 percent agreement rate from taking effect.
The Trump administration subsequently instituted a temporary 10 percent tariff for 150 days under emergency trade authority.
Following the expiration of that 150-day period on July 24, 2026, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) enacted a new framework under Section 301 targeting supply chain vulnerabilities linked to forced labour.
