Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed pays tribute to Liberation War Martyrs at National Memorial

Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram on Sunday paid homage to the martyrs of Bangladesh's Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital.
He arrived at the memorial premises at around 11:30 am and laid a wreath at the altar in honour of the nation's fallen heroes. Following the wreath-laying ceremony, he signed the visitors' book and recorded his remarks.
The ceremony was attended by the chiefs of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force, along with senior military and civilian officials and other government dignitaries.
After completing the official programme, the Acting President left the memorial premises in a motorcade. Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its associate bodies gathered in front of the main entrance of the memorial to welcome him, chanting various slogans.
Security measures were significantly strengthened in and around the National Martyrs' Memorial from Saturday ahead of the Acting President's visit.
Md. Jahangir Alam, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime, Operations and Traffic-North) of Dhaka District Police, said the highest level of security had been ensured across Savar for the visit. Despite the heightened security arrangements, traffic on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway remained normal.
It may be recalled that following the resignation of President Mohammad Shahabuddin on health grounds, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, assumed the responsibilities of Acting President in accordance with the Constitution. Sunday's visit marked his first official tribute at the National Martyrs' Memorial since taking office.
