A huge project was inaugurated in Kulla Union of Dhamrai near Savar, Dhaka to alleviate waterlogging and improve agricultural irrigation system on  Wednesday.

 

Member of Parliament for Dhaka-20 (Dhamrai) Constituency, Alhaj Tamiz Uddin, inaugurated the canal digging work in the Laduakunda area of Kulla Union.

In his speech as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, MP Tamiz Uddin said, "BNP has always believed in the politics of production and development. Today, we have started the canal digging work to bring smiles to the faces of the farmers of Dhamrai, following the canal digging revolution that was started by the architect of modern Bangladesh, martyred President Ziaur Rahman in 1977. On the instructions of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia's son, current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, we are determined to provide services to the remotest corners of the people."

According to sources from the office of the Dhamrai Upazila PIO  the work of digging the related canals including Laduakunda-Basail-Barigaon up to the Banshi River will continue. The goal of removing long-standing accumulated waterlogging during the rainy season and increasing agricultural production several times through irrigation facilities during the dry season will be achieved.

Dhamrai UNO  Al Mamun was present as a special guest at the ceremony. Also present at the event were: Upazila PIO  Engineer AKM Mohitul Islam, Kulla Union Administrator and Dhamrai Upazila URC Instructor Zohra Khatun Poli, Dhamrai Upazila Engineer Mishuk Kumar Dutta, Dhamrai Upazila BNP General Secretary Shamsul Haque, and leaders and activists of BNP's constituent organizations, in addition to public representatives.

BNP leaders and activists said that since the people's government was established after the retirement of the Awami League misrule, now the development works are being completed with transparency. They called this canal digging initiative a part of the agricultural revolution.

Chief guest MP Alhaj Tamiz Uddin said, "Martyr Ziaur Rahman's canal digging program was a tool to change the fate of the farmers of this country. We will restore an agriculturally friendly environment in every corner of Dhamrai. As a result of digging this canal, thousands of acres of land in this area will be freed from waterlogging." 

Dhamrai UNO  said, "The work of this project will be completed transparently under government supervision. "Our main goal is to ensure water availability for local farmers and eliminate waterlogging."
