The body recovered from the DND Lake in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, has been identified as that of 17-year-old Md Yasin. On Monday evening, Yasin left his family’s home in Chashara to buy medicine for his mother but never returned.

On Wednesday morning (August 13), locals spotted his body floating in the lake at Painaadi CIkhola, several kilometres from his home. Police recovered the body and later that night, family members confirmed his identity at the Narayanganj General Hospital morgue.

Yasin, the youngest of three siblings, was the son of Mohammad Ali of Kanchpur in Sonargaon upazila. His father lives in Saudi Arabia for work, while his mother, Afrina Nasrin, lives in a rented flat in Chashara with the children for their education.

Speaking in front of the hospital morgue on Thursday morning (August 14), Yasin’s uncle Monsur Rahman said his nephew was a student at Beige School in Paikpara Noyapara. He had scored GPA 4.62 in the recently published SSC results in July. On Monday evening, he left home with Tk 50 to buy medicine from a nearby pharmacy. “It should not have taken more than 10 minutes, but when he did not return, we started calling his phone. It was on until around 2am, but nobody answered,” Monsur said.

That night, Yasin’s mother filed a general diary with Sadar Model Police Station. “The pharmacy is just next to the house, yet he never came back. We could not understand what had happened,” said his cousin Muntasir Rahman Jihad.

Monsur added that Yasin had, on previous occasions, left home in anger and spent the night at a mosque, but had always returned. “We cannot understand how his body ended up in the DND Lake this time,” he said, demanding a thorough investigation.

Dr Haider Ali Shimul, a physician at Narayanganj General Hospital who conducted the autopsy, said, “There are injury marks on the head and chest. In cases of drowning, water is found in the stomach, but we did not find that here. This appears to be a case of homicide.”

Sub-Inspector Wali Saudagar of Siddhirganj Police Station, who is investigating the case, said an unnatural death case has been filed. The family said Yasin had a mobile phone with him, but it was missing. Based on the body’s condition, police believe it had been in the water for at least 24 hours. “We are investigating seriously. If it is murder, the investigation will reveal it,” said the SI.
