Chief Whip of Parliament and four-time Member of Parliament for Barguna-2 Alhaj Nurul Islam Moni stressed the importance of regular sports to keep the youth generation away from drugs, stating that there is no alternative to sports in building a drug-free society.

The Chief Whip made the remarks as the chief guest at the mega final and award distribution ceremony of the Shaheed Zia Memorial Football Tournament 2026, held at Holta Douatala Cooperative Multilateral High School ground in Bamna upazila of Barguna on Wednesday afternoon, October 14. He officially inaugurated the final match by releasing pigeons.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Whip emphasized that alongside maintaining overall national development, prioritizing sports on the national agenda is essential. He noted that talented athletes emerging from local levels will bring honor and prestige to Bangladesh on international stages. He added that engaging the youth in sports is a vital state responsibility to build a healthy and conscious society.

The final match generated intense enthusiasm among sports lovers across Bamna and adjacent areas, attracting a large crowd of spectators. In a hard-fought contest, New Boys Sporting Club of Pirojpur defeated Douatala Sadar Academy 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the stipulated time ended in a goalless draw.

Chaired by Microtex Design Chairman and prominent industrialist Alhaj Md. Ruhul Amin Sharif, the ceremony was attended by Bamna UNO  Mst. Nikhat Ara and Bamna Police Station OC  Md. Faruk Hossain Khan as special guests, alongside local administrative officials and political leaders.

Local organizers and administrative representatives welcomed the initiative, asserting that sports promote social discipline, brotherhood, and youth development. Following the match, trophies and prizes were handed over to the champion and runners-up teams.
