Chief whip says influential quarters back teen gangs, vows crackdown

Influential quarters are backing teen gangs, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said on Friday, vowing to uproot their activities within three months.

“Influential quarters are directly backing the teenage gangs. Their activities will be completely eradicated within the next three months,” he said, according to a press release.

He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a shadow parliament session titled ‘Social Movement is More Effective than Political Goodwill in Preventing Teen Gangs’ arranged by 'Debate for Democracy' at the FDC in the capital.

“Teenagers will not wander around with weapons or cleavers. They will go to school with books and notebooks, study, become skilled, work with artificial intelligence, and enter the robotics era,” he said.

He claimed those currently involved in terrorism and mobbing were also involved in similar activities during the previous regime, adding that the authorities are trying to identify and filter them out.

“We do not want to see any ‘helmet forces’, nor does the current government have any intention of creating ‘hammer forces’,” he said.

He also called for an end to blame-game politics.

He said obscene language would no longer be tolerated and warned that action would be taken against those spreading misinformation through YouTube and Facebook.

He also said the government is running the country with the mandate of the people and that no one would be allowed to escape punishment for criminal activities.

Referring to the resignation of BNP reserved women’s seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti following a vandalism incident at Radda Clinic, he said, the resignation sent a stern and strict message against irregularities.

“We have initiated crime control activities from our own home. However, the country must move forward through everyone’s united efforts,” he said.

‘Debate for Democracy’ Chairman Hassan Ahamed Chowdhury Kiron Presided over the event.
