Corruption allegations : Probe ordered against Railway DG Afzal Hossain

A high-level investigation has been ordered against Bangladesh Railway Director General (DG) Md. Afzal Hossain over allegations of irregularities in postings and promotions, seniority violation, abuse of power, financial corruption, and accumulation of illegal wealth.
The investigation follows multiple complaints forwarded by the Ministry of Public Administration, the Press Information Department (PID), human rights organizations, and ongoing Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) inquiries, triggering significant stir within the Ministry of Railways.
According to official documents, a letter issued on August 27, 2026, by the Administration-3 branch of the Ministry of Railways (Memo No: 24.00.0000.000.023.27.0007.26.
The official directive, signed by Deputy Director (Additional Charge) B. M. Mashiur Rahman, requested Additional Secretary of the Development Wing Md. Ziaul Haq to verify the allegations—including media reports published on August 10 titled "Corruption in Padma Rail Project, Ensure Punishment of Those Responsible"—and submit a report with clear findings within 15 working days.
Concurrently, a human rights organization, the 'Society for Enforcement of Basic Rights' (SEBR), lodged a written complaint with the Ministry of Public Administration regarding Afzal Hossain's alleged abuse of power, transfer trade, and financial misconduct. The Public Administration Ministry subsequently instructed the Ministry of Railways to take necessary investigative action.
In addition, separate inquiries are currently underway at the ACC concerning his alleged involvement in financial misappropriation related to railway procurements, rolling stock acquisition, and various development projects.
Ministry officials stated that an impartial investigation will be conducted in accordance with government service rules, and appropriate departmental and legal actions will follow if the allegations are substantiated.
