DU provides white canes, financial assistance to 160 visually impaired individuals

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam said that Dhaka University will work to ensure an inclusive, safe and humane learning environment for visually impaired students. To this end, accessible reading rooms, advanced teaching technology and necessary educational materials will be provided in the university's central library and various departments. In addition, initiatives will be taken to make the campus sidewalks and walkways disability-friendly and to increase awareness among teachers and students.
He said these while speaking as a special guest at the white cane distribution program among visually impaired students at the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dhaka University, on the occasion of World White Cane Safety Day-2026, Saturday noon.

White canes and financial assistance were distributed among 160 visually impaired people at the program. At the beginning of the program, readings were made from various religious scriptures.
Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie MP was present as the chief guest at the event. Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Mohammad Almojaddidi Alfesani presided over the event. Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Kazi Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, former Chairman of the Complaint and Vigilance Committee of the Bangladesh Bar Council Advocate Md. Abdul Matin and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Dr. Md. Atiqul Islam also spoke as special guests.
Chief guest, Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie said, "Ensuring safe movement, independence, self-esteem and self-reliance of visually impaired people is a joint responsibility of the state and society.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Mohammad Almojaddidi Alfesani said that the white cane is not just a mobility aid; it is a symbol of independence, confidence and safe movement for the visually impaired.
Mohammad Mujibur Rahman, Principal Disability Affairs Officer of Dhaka University Library, delivered the welcome speech at the event. The event, organized on his initiative, was sponsored by Captain Syed Abu Ahad, Chairman of Ahad Foundation, Kaitla, Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria.
