Former MP Mrinal Kanti Das, wife's assets seized

Md. Masud Khan, Munshiganj (South)

The court has ordered the seizure of both immovable and movable assets belonging to former Member of Parliament of Munshiganj-3 constituency (2014–2024) and central Awami League Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das and his wife Nilima Das, along with a travel ban on both individuals.

The order was issued on Wednesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain Galib.

Among the seized assets, Mrinal Kanti Das owns an apartment worth Tk 18 lakh in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, and a car valued at Tk 20.44 lakh. Additionally, the court ordered the freezing of Tk 8.73 lakh across eight of his bank accounts.

His wife, Nilima Das, owns a plot worth Tk 12.5 lakh in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, and an apartment on it valued at Tk 20.2 lakh, all of which have been seized. Furthermore, the court has ordered the freezing of Tk 10.61 lakh across 30 of her bank accounts.

According to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Mrinal Kanti Das, during his tenure as a Member of Parliament, abused his power and engaged in corrupt practices, thereby acquiring wealth inconsistent with his known sources of income.

The ACC stated that during the investigation, evidence surfaced that the accused were attempting to sell, transfer, or otherwise dispose of the assets. Hence, they sought court orders to seize the immovable properties and freeze the moveable assets.

Travel Ban In two separate cases involving the acquisition of wealth beyond known sources of income, the court also imposed a travel ban on Mrinal Kanti Das. In one of these cases, a travel ban was also issued against his wife, Nilima Das. These orders were passed by Judge Md. Zakir Hossain Galib on Wednesday (June 25), based on petitions filed by the ACC.

ACC’s Assistant Director (Public Relations) Md. Tanzir Ahmed confirmed the information. The investigating officer of the case, ACC Deputy Assistant Director Mohammad Zulfikar, filed the petition seeking a travel ban, citing intelligence that both Mrinal and Nilima Das were secretly planning to flee the country. Their departure would jeopardize the ongoing investigation, the ACC argued.

The ACC had filed two separate cases against Mrinal Kanti Das and Nilima Das on March 18. In one case, both husband and wife were accused; in the other, Mrinal was the sole accused. The cases were filed by ACC Assistant Director Md. Shahjahan Miraj.

In Mrinal Kanti’s case, he is accused of acquiring and holding assets worth Tk 1.55 crore that are inconsistent with his known sources of income. Between 2013 and 2024, Tk 1.22 crore was deposited and Tk 1.18 crore withdrawn from eight of his bank accounts, with the total amounting to suspicious transactions worth Tk 2.4 crore.

The ACC alleged that the former MP had concealed the illegal sources of money obtained through corruption and bribes by transferring and converting them into assets.

Nilima Das is also accused of acquiring and possessing assets worth Tk 1.45 crore inconsistent with her known sources of income, allegedly with the help of her husband.
