The generation that overthrew Sheikh Hasina’s “fascism” and Indian “hegemony” without weapons or foreign aid can achieve anything, said Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman at Khulna University on Wednesday.
Speaking at a discussion on “The Role of Journalists in the Anti-Fascist Movement”, organized jointly by the Khulna University Journalists’ Association ( KUJA) and the Office of the Director of Student Affairs, Rahman said the July Movement has shown the nation a new path. “Despite 16–17 years of fascist rule, such a fearless young generation has emerged — and that is remarkable,” he added.
He accused businessmen, bureaucrats, intellectuals, and journalists of enabling fascism in the past by creating narratives in its favor. While the July Movement restored freedom of speech, true liberation will only be proven after the upcoming elections.
Khulna University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim, speaking as chief patron, called the July Movement “A history where patriotic students and people challenged a fascist regime and restored freedom of speech.”
KUJA President Al kama Romin presided over the event. The session was conducted by students Zarin Prova and Mahbubur Rahman Akash.
A minute’s silence was observed for the martyrs of the July Movement. University officials, faculty members, students, activists, and media representatives attended.
