A college student has begun a hunger strike at the home of her lover, Ashikur Rahman Sabbir (30), a Saudi Arabia expatriate, demanding marriage at Lohagara Upazila.
The protest started on Friday (May 23) at around 11 AM in Chapulia village, Kotakol Union, Lohagara Upazila. When the college student arrived at Sabbir’s house and began her hunger strike, Sabbir’s father, Haidar Ali, reportedly attempted to mistreat her but was stopped by locals.
The college student stated that she developed a romantic relationship with Ashikur Rahman Sabbir, son of Haidar Ali from Chapulia village, Kotakol Union, about eight months ago through TikTok. She alleged that Sabbir lured her with promises of marriage and engaged in video calls with her. During their conversations, they exchanged objectionable photos via mobile phone. She claimed that Sabbir attempted to blackmail her with those photos. When she cut off contact with him, he sent the photos to her brother’s phone. Feeling helpless and contemplating suicide, she was dissuaded by her family. She said, “Since I came to this house today, I won’t leave. I’ll stay here. I’ll consume poison or hang myself. Since Sabbir sent those photos to my relatives, what choice do I have but to die? And if I die, I’ll die in this house.”
Sabbir’s father, Haidar Ali, denied any relationship between his son and the girl, claiming the photos she presented appeared to be edited. However, Sabbir’s mother admitted there was a relationship but alleged that the girl had extorted one lakh taka from her son.
Nazrul Islam, UP member of Ward No. 9, Kotakol Union, said, “We, the villagers, urged the boy’s father to accept the girl, but they didn’t take our advice seriously.”
Lohagara Police Station’s OC Md. Shariful Islam, stated in the afternoon, “No one has lodged a complaint with us regarding this matter. If a complaint is received, we will investigate and take legal action.”
