Irregularities in rice distribution under Food-Friendly Program in Patuakhali alleged

Allegations of irregularities have surfaced in the government’s rice distribution program for the ultra-poor in Lohalia Union of Patuakhali Sadar Upazila.
Beneficiaries claimed they were given 28 kg of rice instead of the allocated 30 kg under the Food-Friendly Program.
On Thursday (21 August), during rice distribution at the Palpara Bazar sales center in Lohalia Union, beneficiaries reported that they received less rice than prescribed. According to government directives, each beneficiary is supposed to receive 30 kg of rice at Tk 15 per kg, but they alleged that dealers were providing 2 kg less.
Several beneficiaries, including Rabeya Begum, said, “Although we pay for 30 kg of rice, we only get 28 kg. This shortage happens regularly. Even after reporting it to the concerned authorities, no action has been taken.”
When asked about the allegations, dealer Kamal Hossain Mridha said, “I am the president of the Union BNP. Check my record—you will see I do not engage in wrongdoing. One of my workers had been giving less rice, but I have already removed him. Now there is no chance of any shortage.”
Locals, however, argued that the government’s initiative aims to ensure food security for the poor, but due to dealers’ irregularities, beneficiaries are being deprived. They also pointed out that a lack of regular monitoring by the administration allows such issues to persist.
Patuakhali Sadar UNO Iffat Ara Jaman Urmi said, “I am sending officials to investigate. If the allegations are proven true, action will be taken against the dealer.”
