Israel accuses Iran of violating ceasefire, Tehran denies

World Desk

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz has accused Iran of violating the ceasefire between the two countries and has ordered what he described as “powerful strikes” on targets in the Iranian capital.

In a statement, Katz said he had instructed the Israel Defense Forces to "respond forcefully to Iran's violation of the ceasefire with intense strikes against regime targets in the heart of Tehran".

Iranian state media has responded to Israel’s accusations, saying Iran denies reports that it fired a missile at Israel after the ceasefire began.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister said the country would only halt its attacks if Israel did the same.

The latest developments come after former US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran following 12 days of deadly cross-border attacks.

Hours before the ceasefire was due to take effect, Tehran experienced what correspondents described as one of the most intense nights of the conflict so far, according to BBC Persian.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials said four people had been killed inside Israel.

The recent escalation follows Iran’s launch of missiles targeting a US airbase, in retaliation for strikes on its nuclear sites over the weekend. Qatar, which hosts the Al Udeid US airbase, said all of those missiles were intercepted.

Israeli military reports fresh missile launches

In a separate development, the Israeli military has reported fresh missile launches from Iran.

In a brief statement, it said: “Air defence systems are operating to intercept the threat” and urged residents to take shelter and remain there until further notice.

The exact scale and details of the reported missile launch remain unclear, and Iran has not publicly acknowledged firing any missiles.

This latest exchange casts further doubt over the fate of the ceasefire, with both sides accusing each other of breaching the agreement.

Iran has maintained that it would stop its attacks only if Israel did the same.

Tensions between the two long-standing rivals have intensified in recent weeks, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
