Moyannaf Hosen Shimul, Joypurhat
Police arrested three individuals, including a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, in connection with a murder case filed over the brutal killing of student leader Biplab Ahmed Pial in broad daylight due to prior enmity in Joypurhat on Thursday night in an operations conducted in various locations across Jaipurhat and Naogaon districts.
The arrested individuals are Nasrin (29), wife of Rubel Hosen from Islamnagar in the city, Shraboni Akter (24), wife of Sohel Rana from the same area, and Rasel (35), son of Chhamsuddin from Dakshin Kochkuri village in Bhadasa Union of Sadar Upazila. Local sources confirmed that they are related as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
The deceased, Pial, was the son of Mohammad Bachchu Miya from Islamnagar and the senior joint convener of Jaipurhat city Chhatra Dal. He was also the owner of a motorcycle garage named “Bike Wash.”
According to the case FIR, on Wednesday (May 28) after 12 PM, a group of miscreants took position in front of Pial’s garage in Islamnagar. When Pial arrived at the garage, the accused verbally abused him. Upon his protest, they attacked him with iron rods. As Pial tried to flee to save his life, the assailants chased him to his house gate, surrounded him, and stabbed him multiple times in the stomach, chest, and back with a sharp Burmese knife, causing his intestines to spill out. Several others held his hands and legs, brutally assaulting him. Locals rescued him and took him to Jaipurhat General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Following the incident, Pial’s mother, Iti Begum, filed a murder case at Jaipurhat Police Station.
According to police and local sources, a conflict arose over a piece of government land in Islamnagar, which was leased by Awami League volunteer leader Anowar Hosen and his associates to build several shops. After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, Chhatra Dal leader Pial took control of the land, sparking tensions between the two groups. The situation escalated due to allegations of inappropriate behavior with Anowar’s wife and other issues. On March 12 this year, Pial was attacked for the first time, leading to a case filed at Santhahar GRP Police Station. Anowar and several others were arrested in that case, and while some secured bail, Anowar remains in jail. Pial had recently returned to the area after medical treatment and was maintaining his previous influence.
Jaipurhat Police Station OC Nur Alam Siddique confirmed that three individuals involved in the incident have been arrested, and police operations are ongoing to apprehend the others.
