Judicial Employees Association observes work stoppage in Rangpur

Rangpur Bureau

Bangladesh Judicial Employees Association Rangpur Branch  has observed a work stoppage in Rangpur on two demands: setting up a separate secretariat under the Supreme Court for the judiciary, providing salary allowances to the subordinate courts and tribunals as judicial assistants, including the Bangladesh Judicial Service Pay Scale, including the 1st to 6th grades of the existing Judicial Service Pay Scale, and abolishing the existing block posts, creating new posts suitable for the times, and formulating independent recruitment rules with opportunities for promotion based on qualifications and seniority. On Monday,  the Bangladesh Judicial Employees Association Rangpur District Branch organized this work stoppage for 2 hours in the morning in the court premises in a completely peaceful manner. At that time, the speakers said that the judiciary was separated from the executive branch on November 1, 2007. After this, the recruitment rules were formulated with separate pay scales for judges with 6 grades, but the auxiliary staff were not included in the pay scale. Although the auxiliary staff of the court worked with the judges, the salaries and allowances of the judges were paid in the light of the Judicial Service Pay Scale, but the auxiliary staff received salaries and allowances in the light of public administration. Although there is a provision for the payment of other judicial allowances, watch allowance, allowance for the vacation of the civil court in December and an allowance equivalent to one month's basic salary for performing duties in the criminal court, no such allowance is paid to the auxiliary staff of the court. After being crushed by the caste system of discrimination for 18 years, the progress that began with the determination of the new interim government to build a Bangladesh free of discrimination through the mass uprising in July 2024, the association started dreaming with a new core. In continuation of that, welcoming the unprecedented initiative of the interim government, the leaders of the association met the Judicial Reform Commission formed by the government and presented their demands. However, in the recommendation of the commission report, there was no proposal to provide salaries and allowances to the auxiliary employees of the subordinate courts as auxiliary employees of the judiciary in the light of the Bangladesh Judicial Service salary scale. Moreover, it has been recommended to post judicial officers to perform administrative duties of the subordinate courts to block the promotion opportunities of the court employees. Such a proposal will further narrow the scope of promotion of the subordinate court employees. In May, employees are retiring without promotion despite serving in the same position for 38/40 years, which is not desirable in any way. The judiciary is one of the three important organs of the state, and the auxiliary employees of the judiciary are the most neglected and exploited.Bangladesh Judicial Employees Association Rangpur District Branch President Obaidul Islam, Vice President Waheduzzaman, General Secretary Abdur Razzak, Organizing Secretary Akhiruzzaman, and Treasurer Atiqur Rahman were present at the strike and spoke.
